Winter solstice

The week before the winter solstice (15–22. December) is called - 'luua' - week according to the ancient custom of Northern Estonia. The winter solstice was considered the beginning of a new, next cycle of time, a year, four years and beyond.

To explain how to understand the Estonian word - ‘luua’ :

Luud - bones

Luud - broom

Luua - to create

Luua - which (broom, bones, create) has

Luuanädal - a week to sweep

Just as the human body stands on bones, creation is also supported by something and rests on something. In order to create, to start building, you have to find a place or clean-sweep it out.

The Tibetans have an expression - "the bones of the heart" - which can express the way or thought the heart beats. What could have been the content of this week for the ancient Estonians, throughout the ages. Thinking this way, this content could be thinking about the rhythm of the heart, tuning and setting the beat, synchronizing with, from the winter solstice. December 21, the last day of the week to sweep (luuanädal), was considered important, what is called ‘Tooma’ (Bring) day, when the preparation had to be done in order to start the rite on the solstice. On the solstice, 4 weeks passed since ‘Karjaema’s Day (Herd Mother, Shepherd, called ‘Kadri’), which was also an important autumn holiday that was remembered on this day to make plans. On the 23rd, the old year was sent away and the new year was welcomed on the 24th, just as the thoughts of the week of creation had been thought through.

Every 19 years, the winter solstice falls on the third day of the New Moon, the rune of which is ‘Teerist’ (crossroad) to North-Estonians (Est’s), and the Est’s counted it as the beginning of the full cycle of the Moon and the progression in the four-year cycle. (advancement-magic-cure-new) It will be the same in this year 2023. To Est’s, on the solstice and the following two days, the wise man-witch performed a rite using the power of deities, fairies (outer souls), rulers (inner souls), which together formed an oracle for the coming year. It means thought and direction for the following religious holidays in the folk calendar. So, for many Estonians, this time is the time of Christmas and Christmas Eve.

For Est’s, however, it is ‘Jõuluua’ time i.e. Power of broom, bones, creation.

The ritual cycle begins when the full moon is in the southern sky and the bunny (Jänes) is near you (27. Detsember 2:33 am utc +2) like on Sky card above. The length of the lunar phases was counted as 7 days on average and a little more than that: the fall of the new moon, from creation 7 days 10 hours; 14 days 18 hours until the full moon falls; 22 days and 3 hours until the fall of the new moon; 29 days, 12 hours and 14 minutes until the creation of the moon, so 28-29 days. On the days of the month, the helpers were different helpers of each phase day: on the first day the Day Boys, on the second day it is your own day. On the first day, fire souls help. II IV day spring souls. Forest souls on III V day. Heavenly souls on IV VI day. V On the VII day earth souls, also man souls.

4 years ( new, promotion, magic, cure ) – Sun winter solstice + rune number

19 years ( Moon ) – winter solstice + 'Teerist' rune number, June 3rd is always a full moon + soul rune

60 years ( 2x 5 x12 ) – Sun – 21.01–18 ( 19 ).02 + moon creation

66 years ( 4x 16.5 lunar years ) – Moon – animal year, winter solstice + rune number

Winter solstice 24:00. It is rotated so that the moon, which is located in the constellation opposite the South in the sky-constellation, determines a certain approach to this day. Taking into account the home of the rune - about him month by month and in the star picture. The height of the moon above the horizon gives a positive direction up and a negative direction down (the lunar year is 16.5 years, where it reaches the same place). One full year 4x 16.5 is 66, each month for one Ilma. The moon returns to the same place every 8th year, but after 16.5 years to exactly the same place, both in height relative to the horizon and in the sky. In the 8th year, they are in the same place as the Day, compared to the previous time.

…Birth of the Day - On the winter solstice, the springs became holy, so the water itself was also holy without being consecrated, because the Day is born again. Water was taken from there, which was taken to the ancestors and a candle was lit for them so that they could come home. Water was also given along with sacred plants. Day soul - this is the soul that is obtained in the morning when going out to the threshold after greeting the souls in the room. After greeting the Day, they looked around carefully. When something special caught the eye, a pig was taken, it was set up next to the gate, and it was told as a soul that it had been chosen as the soul of that day. It could also be a sound, the color of the sky, some bird chirping in the morning…

When people talk about the calendar in the world, they mostly talk about the solar calendar, which is the most widely used in the world, since February 24, 1582. The duration of the Earth's orbit around the Sun is adjusted in the calendar every four years, in those years when the year is divisible by one hundred and four hundred. There is an overlap with the Lunar calendar every 19 years, when January 1 is always Moon Creation, these years are e.g. 1995, 2014, 2033. Other overlaps with the Lunar calendar, where the week or date is always the same, have not been noticed. When the days of the week coincide with the dates or other cycles have not been of substantive interest. It is interesting to study the names of the days of the week in the calendar in different languages. First you can see (for example in German, English, Swedish) a substantial overlap with the Sun and the Moon, then with the planets of the Solar System: Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn. How the 8 planets of the solar system (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune) got their names and 4 of them the names of the days of the week, and it is in this order that it makes sense to study if the key word is cognition. The nearest and farthest influence (Moon and Sun) is easier to recognize, the influence of other planets is difficult to feel and distinguish one by one. Their influence is more analytically evaluated than felt. How to imagine time, it's rare to find anything reasonable or interesting that has content in mathematics and physics. However, in order to understand things or explain them to others, one should keep in mind, look at the temporal view. Why are there 12 months in the calendar and the dates 28-29 or 30-31 are easy to see through. In Estide's Monthly Calendar, all dates have different names that repeat in the following month. Dominante is the 4th day of the week.

Throughout the ages, according to the new calendar, the winter solstice is between 21 and 23.12, which today also coincides with the Sagittarius-Capricorn sign of the zodiac. Why is the winter solstice associated with the birth of Christ? If we assume that Christ was indeed a real, historical person, he must also have a birthday. It is known that the position of the Sun in relation to the constellations has changed by about 30° over the course of a few thousand years. I can also be sure that the moment of a person's birth determines their characteristics to a very large extent, and to distinguish people it is enough to know their zodiac sign first. Today, people born on Christmas Eve are under the sign of Sagittarius. But 2023 years ago, the sign of that date was Scorpio, if you calculate 360° / 12, as is generally believed. It is in the middle of sector SO according to weather maps. In the Indian pantheon, it is the home of the Earthly Ruler “Son of the Protector of Living Beings”. Calculated differently, it is in the middle of sector WS, which is the home of the deity Brahma and the sign of Virgo, or the time of the autumnal equinox. The Est's have these deities, respectively the Sacred Trees and the Mountain Deity. The equinoxes are passed by the Earth as it revolves around the Sun, and they do not change on Earth.

On the sky map, you can also see the constellation Serpent, which lists 15 stars and the Northern Serpent with another 15 stars, which are above the North Pole in the winter sky and below the North Pole in the spring sky. Both are highest in the northern sky in a counterclockwise direction. These constellations are listed as the 13th month of the solar year. In the Est’s calendar, the influence of these constellations was taken into account in the spring sky, when the North Serpent is under the North Pole. This time came for the rites in March, the week of Moon Creation and the week before the spring equinox. Just as the influence of the 12 constellations of the Zodiac corresponds to their ancient names, when the Sun is between the Earth and the constellations, not directly in that sector of the zodiac. Similarly, one can find an influence on the autumn months of philosophy - the months of September and October - whose names sept and oct refer to the numbers 7 and 8, and not to the numbers 9 and 10 in the sequence. Thus, December is also the tenth (dec), not the 12th month.
